The TNV range is the engine that runs in the mini excavators, skid steers, compact tractors and generator sets of almost every maker: Yanmar of Osaka supplies it to Kubota's rivals such as Kobelco, Takeuchi, Case, New Holland, John Deere, Hitachi and Komatsu, as the register rows of those brands prove. The type code is a formula: the first digit gives the cylinder count (2, 3 or 4), TNV the engine family, the number the bore in millimetres – 70, 76, 82, 84, 88, 94, 98 and 106 – an appended T the turbocharger, Z, L and A version and emission variants. A 3TNV88 is therefore a three-cylinder with 88 mm bore, a 4TNV98T a four-cylinder with 98 mm bore and turbo. The range appeared in the 2000s as successor to the TNE engines and met EPA Tier 3 and 4 and EU Stage IIIA to V with direct injection.

The register lists 15 versions with 10.6 to 74.2 kW and two to four cylinders – from the 2TNV70 for micro excavators to the 4TNV106T for six- to eight-tonne excavators and telehandlers.
The TNV engines are regarded as robust, economical and quiet; the water-cooled design with direct injection and the common-rail versions of the younger stages are the reason the class below 19 kW manages without a particulate filter.
For operators the spread is the advantage: parts, filters and workshop knowledge are available everywhere, and a TNV engine can be swapped between machines of different brands if mounting dimensions and control match.
