The Volvo FE is listed under the Medium Duty Truck series and is a cab-over (COE) truck of the medium class. The predecessor is given as the FL7. Volvo launched the first generation of the FE in 2006 as the successor to the FL; a new generation followed in 2013, available with I-Shift transmission and ESP, among other things.

For this entry the register gives an output of 325 PS (242.4 kW) and an automatic transmission. An automatic is common in distribution and municipal work, because frequent starting and manoeuvring would otherwise force the driver to shift constantly. An output of 242.4 kW sits in the upper part of the medium class and suits vehicles with heavy bodies such as tippers, sweepers or refrigerated boxes.

The FE is offered in several axle layouts; on the European range 4x2, 6x2 and 6x4 with differential locks are standard. A hybrid FE was also developed, with an electric-only range of 1.5 km.

Volvo FE – Medium-Duty Trucks Since 2006, Rooted in the 1970s

The Volvo FE has been built since 2006 and is now in its second generation. It is available as a chassis in various body versions and as a tractor unit across three weight classes. The first generation shared engines and gearboxes with the sister model Volvo FL and was offered, among others, with a 320 hp engine; the cab-over cabs came as day, comfort and sleeper versions for long-haul use. The FE's heritage traces back to the F4/F6 range introduced in 1975. In 2013 the FE was revised for the Euro 6 emissions deadline, gaining the Volvo D8 engine with the automated I-Shift gearbox; electric versions have also been available since 2019, sold in several markets across Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Australia.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
