Volvo L 3314 Laplander – the Swedish military off-roader: a 1.78-litre four-cylinder engine producing 48 kW, four-wheel-drive pick-up versions, 1,400 to 1,800 kg unladen weight

The L 3314, known as the Laplander, is a light off-road vehicle that Volvo developed from the early 1960s for the Swedish military and which also entered service with other armed forces. PU in the type designation stands for pick-up, the 4X4 suffix for permanent four-wheel drive; the digit sequence after the slash on some versions gives a technical parameter of that version.

The register lists here 6 versions with 48 kW from a four-cylinder engine of 1,778 to 1,780cc displacement, unladen weights from 1,400 to 1,800 kg, gross vehicle weights from 2,250 to 2,464 kg, lengths from 4,030 to 4,050 mm and widths from 1,650 to 1,720 mm.

As a rugged off-roader with high ground clearance, the Laplander served primarily military purposes in Nordic climates and rough terrain, but was also used by civilian operators with similar requirements, for instance in forestry and rescue services. The name refers to a design suited to conditions in Lapland, and its simple, easily repaired mechanicals suited long-term operation far from a workshop.

When buying a used vehicle of this type, check the frame and body for corrosion, the condition of the transfer case and differentials, and the tightness of the often simple wiring. Parts today are available mainly through the Scandinavian military-vehicle and classic-vehicle market.

What to check before buying
