Volvo F12-4X2 – the two-axle long-haul truck with 12-litre engine: F range of the 1970s to 1990s, 12 for the engine family of around 12 litres displacement, 4X2 as the drive formula, six-cylinder
Volvo Trucks of Gothenburg has built trucks since the 1920s and with the F range from 1977 into the 1990s brought out a generation of cab-over long-haul trucks that replaced the F86 and F88 of the previous range. The number in the type designation roughly gives the engine family by displacement class: the F10 with around 10 litres, the F12 with around 12 litres and the large F16 with around 16 litres displacement formed the top-of-range programme for long-haul transport, while the lighter F7 handled smaller duties. The suffix 4X2 gives the drive formula, that is two driven of a total of two axles, typical for tractor units and lighter flatbed vehicles in long-haul transport.

The register lists here 7 versions with six-cylinders of 11,978 to 12,000 cm³, unladen weights of 7,110 to 7,960 kg, a gross vehicle weight of 18,000 to 19,500 kg, lengths of 5,920 to 6,000 mm and widths of 2,500 to 2,550 mm.
The F12 was among the most widely driven long-haul trucks in Europe in the 1980s and early 1990s and, with its angular cab, shaped the image of long-haul transport of that era, before Volvo gradually replaced the range with the FH and FM generations.
On a used example from this model-year span, rust on the frame, cab mounts and mudguards, the condition of clutch and gearbox, brakes and axles, and the availability of parts for the now-older range all count; parts run through the Volvo service network and specialist suppliers.

What to check before buying
- Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
- Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.

- Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
