The TAD 1364VE from Volvo Penta is part of the TAD series. Production: 2012. The fuel is 7-15 ppm Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel. The rated output is 375 kW. The engine is turbocharged. The engine meets emissions stage Interim Tier 4. Fuel reaches the combustion chamber through direct injection. The charge air is cooled by air or coolant. Charging is by a wastegate turbocharger. It is a four-stroke diesel engine. The cylinders are arranged in line. The TAD series covers 9 models. Rated output within it ranges from 256 to 515 kW; the TAD 1364VE sits in the middle of that range with 375 kW. Its immediate neighbours are the TAD 1363VE below it with 345 kW and the TAD 1365VE above it with 405 kW. 78 Volvo Penta models across 2 series are on record.

Volvo Penta TAD — Turbocharged, Aftercooled Industrial Engines – inline diesel engines of 4 to 7 litres, in the range since 2001, for construction machinery, agricultural equipment and standby generators

TAD stands for "Turbocharged Aftercooled Diesel" at Volvo Penta — turbocharged, charge-air-cooled inline diesels built as a modular platform for stationary and mobile industrial applications.

Volvo Penta launched the TAD line in 2001 with the TAD420VE, TAD520VE, TAD620VE, TAD720VE and TAD721VE, 4- to 7-liter engines covering 66 to 195 kW at the time; series deliveries began in autumn 2001, and 2003 added the TAD722VE for off-road and stationary use. On newer platforms the D-series has replaced the TAD/TWD designation in many applications, though TAD remains in wide use in the industrial segment.

Applications include materials handling, construction and agricultural machinery, plus stationary uses such as standby generators and pumps — anywhere a rugged, high-torque diesel with industrial approvals is needed rather than a road-going engine.

Cooling differs substantially by application: stationary TAD units in standby power systems often run with a separate air- or liquid-cooled heat exchanger rather than a vehicle-style radiator and fan, while mobile applications in construction and agricultural machinery use a conventional cooling circuit coupled to the drivetrain. As a generator drive, the engine runs at a fixed governed speed to keep grid frequency constant, whereas in mobile machinery it operates under varying load and speed.

On a used TAD unit, verify exactly which model variant (e.g. the VE suffix) and emissions level the engine meets, since Volvo Penta has revised the TAD family repeatedly over two decades and parts availability varies significantly by model year.

What to check before buying

  • Match the data plate against the order: frame size, mounting and rating have to agree.
  • For used units, ask about winding condition and bearing play.
  • Ask about parts availability for this series — the running costs hang on it.
