Volvo BM Valmet 05 series (1979–1985) – the Swedish-Finnish joint range: 305 to 905, 2005 and 2105, the first digit as size class, /4 for four-wheel drive, the end of Volvo tractors, 39 to 120 kW

The 05 series is the result of a Nordic merger: in 1979 Volvo BM of Eskilstuna and Valmet of Suolahti combined their tractor programmes and sold a joint range under the double name Volvo BM Valmet – the small models from Finland, the big ones from Sweden. In 1985 Volvo withdrew from tractor building, Valmet took over the range alone, and the 05s continued as Valmet; the design lived on in the Valmet ranges of the 1980s from which Valtra emerged. The type logic: the first digit orders the size class in ascending order – 305 the three-cylinder entry model, 505 and 605 the four-cylinder mid-range, 705 to 905 the six-cylinder large tractors – the 05 names the series, /4 and -4 four-wheel drive; 2005 and 2105 are the small tractors Valmet added to the range.

The register lists 10 versions with 39 to 119.9 kW, 2,686 to 6,596 cm³ with three to six cylinders, torque from 179 to 536 Nm at 2,100 to 2,350 rpm, unladen weights from 2,710 to 6,395 kg, lengths from 3,710 to 5,100 mm, widths from 1,745 to 2,440 mm and heights from 2,570 to 3,100 mm – all diesel.

The 05s brought the first sound-insulated safety cab in this class in Scandinavia and the engines from Volvo's and Valmet's production; the 905 with 120 kW was the largest tractor the two brands built together.

Used 05s are common working and collector tractors in Sweden, Finland and Norway; when buying, engine condition, gearbox, hydraulics and the cab count; parts run through Valtra, for the Swedish models partly through Volvo specialists.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
