Volvo BM articulated haulers 860 to A40 – the early days of the articulated hauler from Braås: 860 and 861, 5350, A20 to A35 and A40, TD engines, 109 to 295 kW
Under the Volvo BM name the register holds the articulated haulers of the years before 1995, when the construction equipment division still carried the suffix BM for Bolinder-Munktell. They continue the line that began in 1966 with the DR 631 'Gravel Charlie' in Braås: the 860 and 861 of the 1970s are the second generation with the TD 70 six-cylinder, the 5350 and 5350B of the 1980s the third, and with the A20, A25, A30, A35 and A40 the A series began in the late 1980s, its number giving the payload in tonnes and its letters B and C the generations – the system Volvo keeps to today's A60H. 4x4, 6x4 and 6x6 give axles and driven wheels: the 6x6 with all six wheels driven became the standard, the 6x4 remained the lighter road version.

The register lists 17 versions with 108.9 to 294.6 kW from Volvo six-cylinders of 5,473 to 12,000 cm³ – TD 50, TD 60, TD 70 and TD 71 from Volvo's truck programme – torque from 445 to 1,665 Nm at 2,050 to 2,500 rpm, lengths from 8,955 to 11,137 mm, widths from 2,481 to 3,432 mm and heights from 2,800 to 3,700 mm.
The Volvo BM haulers founded the class every major maker serves today: the oscillating articulation, all-wheel drive and a body that unloads even in mud made the articulated hauler the earthmoving vehicle for sites without roads.
Used, the early models are collector pieces and farmyard machines, while the A25C and A40 of the 1990s are still at work. When buying, play in the articulation joint and oscillation bearings, the condition of body cylinders, brakes and tyres and parts supply through Volvo CE are what count.
