Volkswagen T2 – the second-generation Bulli: panel van, pick-up and crew cab with four-cylinder boxer engines from 1.3 to 2.0 litres, gross weights up to 2.5 tonnes

The T2 is the second generation of the Volkswagen Transporter, built in Germany from 1967 in Hanover as the successor to the split-screen T1. Production splits into T2a (1967 to 1971, a one-piece windscreen known as the early tail) and T2b (1972 to 1979, a split bumper and larger tail lights, the late tail); the DOKA suffix marks the crew cab with two rows of seats ahead of the load bed. As with the T1, the air-cooled boxer engine sits at the rear beneath the load floor; in Brazil the T2 continued with a water-cooled engine until 2013 under the name Kombi.

The register lists 14 versions, all with four-cylinder boxer engines from 1,285 to 2,000 cm³, kerb weights from 1,110 to 2,073 kg, gross vehicle weights from 1,942 to 2,510 kg, lengths from 4,420 to 5,250 mm and widths from 1,670 to 2,200 mm.

The T2 shaped the European light-van market of the 1970s as panel van, pick-up, bus and the basis for camper conversions such as those by Westfalia; in Brazil it stayed in production for three further decades after German manufacturing ended, building its own following there for simple, rugged commercial vehicles.

When buying used, check corrosion at the wheel arches, sills, load floor and chassis rails, the condition of valve clearance and crankshaft bearings on the boxer engine, the clutch cable or hydraulics and the drum brakes; crew-cab versions also need the rear bench and load-bed panel checked. Parts are well supported through the independent market and specialists in air-cooled Volkswagens.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
