The LT35 2.5TDI from Volkswagen is part of the LT35 series. Production: 1998. The engine delivers 75 kW, with a displacement of 2,460 cm³. The vehicle is 5,590 mm long and 1,950 mm wide. The unladen weight is 2,630 kg. The gross vehicle weight is 3,200 kg. The LT35 series covers 19 models. Rated output within it ranges from 55 to 116 kW; the LT35 2.5TDI sits in the lower part of that range with 75 kW. Its immediate neighbours are the LT35 2.5TDI-2DX0AE-3.2T-KASTEN/355 below it with 70 kW and the LT35 2.5TDI-2DX0AE-KASTEN/355 above it with 77.5 kW. Unladen weight within it ranges from 2,000 to 2,630 kg; here the LT35 2.5TDI sits at the top of that range with 2,630 kg. 4967 Volkswagen models across 73 series are on record.

Volkswagen LT35 – the 3.5-tonne class of the large VW van, four- to six-cylinder diesels of 1,984 to 2,790 cm³, TDI and SDI, unladen weights of 1,900 to 2,630 kg, built at the Hanover plant

The LT was Volkswagen's large van above the T3/T4, built from 1975 in a first generation developed jointly with MAN, whose cab MAN also used in its own light trucks of the G range; the LT was built at the Hanover-Stöcken plant, which remains VW's commercial-vehicle plant to this day. A second generation followed in 1996, technically more closely related to the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. The 35 suffix denotes the 3.5-tonne weight class, TDI and SDI mark the turbodiesel with and without charge-air cooling respectively, and box bodies with a raised roof are identified in the model names as Kasten-Hochdach. The models captured in the register range from early first-generation vehicles to the parts-catalogue-named variants of the second generation.

The register lists here 19 versions with outputs from 55 to 116 kW, displacements from 1,984 to 2,790 cm³ from four- to six-cylinders, unladen weights from 1,900 to 2,630 kg, gross weights from 3,200 to 3,500 kg, lengths from 5,590 to 6,670 mm and widths from 1,930 to 2,200 mm.

Across two generations the LT35 was the backbone of trades, furniture transport, motorhome conversions and rescue services in the 3.5-tonne class, competing directly with the Mercedes-Benz T1/Sprinter, Iveco Daily and Ford Transit.

On used examples, rust on the sills, wheel arches and lower door edges, the condition of the turbocharger and injection pump on the diesel engines, the clutch and automatic transmission where fitted, and mileage and service history count; parts run through the VW commercial-vehicle network, for the first generation partly also through MAN parts lists.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
