Volkswagen Caddy – compact van since 1982: from the Golf I-based pickup through the Polo-platform Caddy II to the Poznań-built Caddy III/IV, SDI and TDI diesels from 1.2 to 2.0 litres

The Caddy began in 1982 as a pickup based on the Golf I, initially built among other places in the United States; the second generation from 1995 switched to a panel van on the SEAT Ibiza and VW Polo platform. Since the third generation of 2004, Volkswagen has built the Caddy at its Polish plant in Poznań, closely related technically to the Golf V/VI, followed by the fourth-generation facelift in 2015 and the MQB-based Caddy V from 2020. The model designations in the register mirror this development: from the naturally aspirated SDI and TDI diesels of the 1990s to today's turbocharged TSI petrol and TDI diesel units.

The register lists 176 versions with power outputs from 40 to 80 kW, displacements from 1,197 to 1,984 cm³ and four cylinders. Unladen weights range from 898 to 1,875 kg, permissible gross weights from 1,398 to 3,435 kg, widths from 1,620 to 2,060 mm; length figures are only recorded for a smaller share of the models.

As the smallest van in VW's commercial-vehicle range, the Caddy competes with the Citroën Berlingo, the Renault Kangoo and the Ford Transit Connect, sold both as a tradesman's vehicle and as a family-friendly estate (Maxi/Life).

On the older SDI/TDI engines, check the injection pump and the timing-belt change interval; on the newer TDI units, the timing chain and turbocharger; rust on the sliding-door sills and load floor; the clutch on high-mileage examples; and, for the early pickup versions built in the US, the availability of body panels, which is markedly scarcer than for the European-built ranges.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
