The register lists here five versions (50D/1 to 50D/6) with 34 to 50 kW rated output at 2,500 to 2,600 rpm, as a three-cylinder inline engine with 94 mm bore and 107 mm stroke, equal to a displacement of around 2.2 litres. The turbocharger runs a fixed wastegate geometry, injection is direct, and the specified fuel is low-sulphur diesel at 7 to 15 ppm sulphur. The engine is certified to Tier 4 (Final or Phase-in), in the 37 to under 56 kW power category, model year 2014; maximum torque ranges from 160 to 250 Nm at 1,800 rpm.
The compact three-cylinder suits mini excavators, compact loaders, generator sets and smaller compressors; VM Motori here chiefly supplies equipment makers with no small-diesel production of their own, competing with Kubota, Yanmar and Perkins.
On a used purchase, operating hours and service history count, the condition of the turbocharger, the tightness of charge-air hoses and cooler, the condition of the injector nozzles, and the fuel filter and water separator when running on low-sulphur diesel; rough idling or excessive smoke on cold start points to wear in the injection system. Spares run through VM Motori's Italian distribution.
