Valmet 405
Series: Other models
The Valmet 405 is part of the tractor group and features a three‑cylinder engine with a displacement of 2 686 cm³. The engine delivers 61 hp (44.9 kW) at a rated speed of 2 350 rpm and produces a torque of 202 Nm. The machine has a width of 1 938 mm and is equipped with a gearbox offering 8 forward and 4 reverse gears, with an alternative version providing 12 forward and 8 reverse gears. The top speed is 30 km/h, the fuel tank holds 73 l and it falls into the power‑lift category Cat II.
A power output of 61 hp enables the pulling of medium‑size implements, while the torque of 202 Nm provides sufficient pulling force at low engine speeds. The choice between an 8/4 and a 12/8 gear configuration allows adaptation to various working conditions, from field operations to road transport. The maximum speed of 30 km/h permits rapid movement between fields, and the 73‑liter tank supports extended operation periods without frequent refuelling.
Tractors of this size and specification are typically used for tasks such as mowing large fields, pulling plows or other agricultural implements, and transporting loads of several tonnes. The combination of moderate power, adequate torque and a versatile gearbox makes the model suitable for farms that require both field work and lighter transport duties.
Valmet – other models: the collective page of the Finnish and Brazilian tractors outside the named ranges, from the Valmet 15 and 20 of the 1950s through the 361 D, 502 and 705 to the Brazilian 65
This page gathers the Valmet tractors the register could not assign to a named range – the Finnish state group Valtion Metallitehtaat that built Finland's first tractor in 1951 in Tourula near Jyväskylä with the Valmet 15, moved tractor production to Suolahti in 1969 and in 1960 founded a second tractor plant in Mogi das Cruzes near São Paulo, which still produces today as Valtra do Brasil. The type logic: the early models 15, 20 and 33 give the hp class, the three-digit 359, 361, 502, 565, 702 and 705 of the 1960s and 1970s the size in the first digit and the generation in the following ones, D the diesel, -4 four-wheel drive; the Brazilian 65, 85, 118 and 148 give the hp class, and the 118 Alcool is a tractor with ethanol engine from the Brazilian alcohol programme of the 1980s – noted in the register as fuel Alcohol. The engines are Valmet's own from Linnavuori, in Brazil MWM diesels built under licence; in 1997 the name passed to Valtra with the sale to Sisu.

The register lists here 179 versions with 11 to 140 kW from three- to six-cylinders of 1,400 to 7,400 cm³, torque from 157 to 691 Nm, unladen weights from 780 to 12,000 kg, gross weights from 1,250 to 20,000 kg, lengths from 2,500 to 5,720 mm, widths from 1,120 to 2,680 mm and heights from 1,350 to 3,100 mm.
Valmet was the tractor of Finnish farming and forestry and is still one of the big brands in Brazil today; the 6000s and 8000s of the 1990s laid the foundation for Valtra's success in Western Europe.
On used tractors, originality and engine condition count on the classics, clutch, gearbox and hydraulics on the 500s and 700s, HiShift shuttle and electronics on the 6000s; parts run through Valtra and AGCO, in Brazil through Valtra do Brasil.

What to check before buying
- Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
- Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
- Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
- Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
- Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
