The Ursus 4514D is a tractor made by Ursus. 79 hp (58.2 kW) is what the four-cylinder engine gets out of 3.9 litres. Rated output is reached at 2,200 rpm, so it works in the lower rev range.

Top speed is 29 km/h. Unladen weight is 3,500 kg.

Within the range, rated power spans from 30.5 to 193 hp; with 79.1 hp, the 4514D sits in the mid-field. Directly alongside are the 5714 with 79 hp below and the 912 / 914 with 80 hp above.

Ursus — one brand, two licences, many relatives

Anyone looking at an Ursus rarely sees a purely in-house design. The brand's history is a history of licences — and that is precisely why parts are often easier to find than the production figures would suggest.

In 1965 the Warsaw plant began building the C-4011 under a licence agreement with Zetor in Brno. At its heart sat the S-4001 engine, the Polish version of Zetor's Z-4001. That kinship runs through the ranges: the later C-360, built from 1976 and in the programme until the end of 1994, used the S-4003, the strongest engine of that family.

In 1974 a second licence followed — the British one from Massey Ferguson, together with the associated production plant. Models such as the MF 235, MF 255 and MF 265 were then built in Poland with Perkins engines and became a fixture on many farms. The higher Ursus ranges with four-digit numbers descend from this line.

One remarkable long-runner stands out: the C-325 and its revised versions C-328 and C-330 — popularly the "thirties" — plus the C-335 export version, ran without interruption for 34 years until 1993.

When buying used it is therefore worth establishing the range's ancestry first. An Ursus from the Zetor line shares engine parts with Czech machines, one from the Massey Ferguson line with British ones. That decides where to look for components.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
