Traktorenwerk Schönebeck RS09: East German implement carrier of the 1950s/60s, RS 09/124 (GT 124) and RS09/122, 13 to 18 kW from two- and four-cylinder engines, under 1.6 t unladen weight
The RS09 was built at VEB Traktorenwerk Schönebeck near Magdeburg, which became one of East Germany's most important farm machinery makers after the nationalisation of the former Lanz plant. Designed as an implement carrier, the RS09 could be fitted with front- and rear-mounted equipment for tillage, transport and yard work, which made it popular well beyond pure field work. The versions listed here, the RS 09/124 (also designated GT 124) and the RS09/122, differ in engine and bodywork.

The register lists 2 versions here with 13.2 to 18.4 kW from two- to four-cylinder engines of 1,145 to 1,600 cm³, unladen weights of 1,370 to 1,600 kg, lengths of 3,560 to 3,878 mm, a width of 1,520 mm and heights of 1,845 to 2,510 mm at a rated speed of 3,000 rpm.
The RS09 was widespread in East German agriculture of the 1950s and 1960s and, as a versatile implement carrier, shaped the mechanisation of smaller and medium-sized farms until the successor ZT series took over production in Schönebeck from the late 1960s.
When buying one of these historic tractors, attention should go to the condition of the engine and injection pump, the tightness of the cooling system and hydraulics, rust on the frame and sheet-metal parts, and the completeness of the implement mounting points; spare parts are now mostly only available through vintage-tractor specialists and donor vehicles.

What to check before buying
- Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
- Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
- Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
- Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
- Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
- Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
