Toyota Material Handling – other nonroad diesel engines: the collective page of forklift engines with the KD and ZS codes, three- to six-cylinder, 38 to 55 kW, Tier 4 Final and Interim Tier 4
Toyota Material Handling is the forklift and warehouse-technology division of Japan's Toyota Industries group. The diesel engines listed here with the KD and ZS codes come from Toyota Industries' own engine programme and power the brand's counterbalance forklifts. The EPA certification groups together seven versions that differ in cylinder count, bore and stroke, and injection system.

The register lists here seven versions with 38 to 55 kW rated power at 2,000 to 2,500 rpm, from inline three- to six-cylinder engines with an 86 to 98 mm bore and 103 to 115 mm stroke. Four engines are fitted with a variable-geometry turbocharger, the rest run unturbocharged; four use direct diesel injection, three indirect injection, all on ultra-low-sulphur fuel. Four engines meet Tier 4 (Final or Phase-in), three the Interim Tier 4 stage, the power category is uniform at 37 to under 56 kW; certified model years run from 2014 to 2021. Maximum torque ranges from 157 to 327.5 Nm at 1,500 to 2,500 rpm.
Diesels in this power class drive counterbalance forklifts for outdoor use, where battery-electric trucks run into range or charging-infrastructure limits; Toyota Material Handling thus competes in the diesel-forklift segment with Linde, Hyster-Yale, Mitsubishi and Caterpillar-licensed products, which rely partly on bought-in and partly on their own engines.
When buying a used forklift, operating hours rather than mileage matter above all, along with the condition of the radiator and hydraulic pump under continuous duty and, depending on the version, the function of the variable-geometry turbocharger or, on the naturally aspirated engines, compression and the injection pump; on the older indirect-injection units it is also worth checking the glow-plug system. Spares and service run through the Toyota Material Handling dealer network.

What to check before buying
- Match the data plate against the order: frame size, mounting and rating have to agree.
- For used units, ask about winding condition and bearing play.
- Ask about parts availability for this series — the running costs hang on it.
