Tempo – other models: collective page of the Hamburg Vidal & Sohn ranges Hanseat, Viking and Rapid, 0.69 to 1.49-litre engines, 800 to 1,350kg unladen weight

This page gathers models from the Hamburg manufacturer Vidal & Sohn Tempo-Werk which the register could not assign to a named range – from the three-wheeled Hanseat through the Viking and Rapid to light vans registered in Finland, listed there as avopakettiauto (open delivery van). Tempo built light three- and four-wheeled vehicles for distribution work from the 1930s and belonged for a time to the Hanomag-Henschel group. The name Hanseat refers to Hamburg's Hanseatic tradition as the home of the works.

The register lists here 6 versions with 690 to 1,490cc displacement from two to four cylinders, 800 to 1,350kg unladen weight against a gross vehicle weight of 1,590 to 2,600kg, 4,770 to 4,890mm length and 1,700 to 2,000mm width.

The three-wheeled Hanseat models used the combination of low kerb weight and comparatively high payload typical of post-war delivery vehicles, while the Viking and Rapid, as four-wheeled successors, marked the move to more conventional light vans.

When buying used, check on the three-wheel models the condition of the steering and front suspension, generally rust on the cab and load area, the condition of the small-displacement engine, and the sharply limited availability of spare parts, now covered in practice mainly by classic-vehicle specialists and reproduction parts.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
