Tatra of Kopřivnice has built its heavy trucks continuously on the same design principle since the T111 of 1942: a central backbone-tube frame with independent suspension on all axles, allowing high wheel articulation even off-road. The type number has always simply denoted the model in the works' development sequence, from the T111 to the T815; axle formulas such as 6X6 and 8X8 denote drive on all axles.
