The machine runs on 12 wheels. Maximum torque is reached at 1,300 rpm. Tyre size: 445/95 R 25 (16,00 R 25). The Tadano All Terrain Crane series covers 20 models. Rated output within it ranges from 176.4 to 633.7 hp; the ATF 400G-6 sits at the top of that range with 633.7 hp. Its immediate neighbours are the ATF220G-5 below it with 537.4 hp. Unladen weight within it ranges from 23,950 to 71,750 kg; here the ATF 400G-6 sits at the top of that range with 71,750 kg. 102 Tadano models across 7 series are on record.

Tadano all-terrain cranes ATF 30 to ATF 400G-6 – Faun heritage from Lauf an der Pegnitz: the type logic capacity-G-axles, 130 to 324 kW, up to 400 t

The ATF cranes are the European face of Tadano: ATF stands for All Terrain Faun, because the cranes are built at the Lauf an der Pegnitz plant near Nuremberg, which Tadano took over in 1990 from the Franconian commercial-vehicle maker Faun. Since 2019 Demag Mobile Cranes of Zweibrücken has also belonged to Tadano; the two programmes were merged and younger models carry the AC designation. The register shows the classic ATF generation: the number gives the maximum capacity in tonnes, the G the generation with Tadano control and Euromot engines, the number after the hyphen the axle count – an ATF 100G-4 is a 100-tonner on four axles, an ATF 400G-6 a 400-tonner on six axles. Suffixes such as XL mark the long-boom version, RTF the rough-terrain cranes without road approval and AR the Japanese all-terrain models.

In the register the models run from 130.5 to 324.4 kW from six- and eight-cylinders of 7,201 to 15,928 cm³, torque from 472 to 1,730 Nm at rated speeds of 1,700 to 2,300 rpm, service weights from 23,950 to 59,999 kg and gross weights from 48,000 to 60,000 kg – the twelve-tonne axle load is the limit European roads set for cranes – lengths from 13,110 to 14,930 mm and widths from 2,750 to 2,800 mm.

All-terrain cranes combine road travel at 80 km/h with off-road capability through all-wheel drive and all-wheel steering; Tadano's hallmarks are the single-engine drive on the medium models (one engine for travel and crane operation) and the Lift Adjuster against load swing.

Used ATFs are traded worldwide. When buying, operating hours separated into travel and crane operation, the condition of telescopic boom and locking, slew ring, outriggers, ropes and the inspection history under the crane rules of the respective country are what count.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
