Suzuki Vitara as a commercial vehicle – the collective page of the two-seat Commercial version of the SUV: 1.6 and 2.0-litre petrol, 1.9-litre turbodiesel, 64 to 67.5 kW, unladen weight 995 to 1,460 kg

This page gathers the Suzuki Vitara registered as a two-seat commercial vehicle. The compact SUV entered production in 1988 at Suzuki's Kosai plant, and for European markets a Commercial version without a rear bench and without rear side glazing was registered as a light commercial vehicle of class N1, taxed as a van rather than a passenger car. JLX and J.LX denote the trim line, VAN and Commercial the commercial bodywork, KAT. the regulated catalytic converter, AUT. the automatic gearbox; the Villager version was a special series with extended equipment. Power came from Suzuki's own 16V four-cylinder of 1.6 and 2.0 litres and a 1.9-litre turbodiesel.

The register lists here 15 versions with 64 to 67.5 kW from four-cylinders of 1,590 to 1,998 cm³, unladen weights from 995 to 1,460 kg, gross weights from 1,450 to 1,945 kg, a length of 4,130 mm and widths from 1,630 to 1,810 mm.

In the late 1980s the Vitara opened the segment of compact, unibody SUVs to private buyers and at the same time became a tradesman's vehicle: the Commercial version appealed to small businesses that benefited from lower commercial-vehicle taxation without giving up four-wheel drive and off-road ability. This variant was especially common in the Netherlands and Britain.

On used examples, rust on sills, wheel arches and the floorpan, the condition of the transfer case, freewheeling hubs and propshaft, clutch and head gasket on the turbodiesel, and seals and hood on open versions all count; parts run through Suzuki and the free trade in off-road parts.
