Suzuki Carry – the Japanese kei-class light truck since 1961, from the 650cc micro-truck to the internationally built 1.3-litre version with four-wheel drive, 28 to 47 kW, three- and four-cylinder engines

Since its introduction in 1961, the Suzuki Carry has been one of Japan's defining kei-class commercial vehicles: a compact pick-up or box van whose dimensions follow Japan's kei-car standard with its tax advantages, with the engine under or behind the load bed and either rear-wheel or four-wheel drive. Over the decades the Carry went through numerous generations and was built in parallel in larger, internationally marketed versions of up to 1.3 litres, which outside Japan served as a pick-up and van for trades, agriculture and urban delivery.

The register lists here 13 versions with 28 to 47 kW from three- and four-cylinders of 650 to 1,298 cm³, unladen weights from 675 to 1,080 kg, gross weights from 1,170 to 1,640 kg, lengths from 3,290 to 3,680 mm and widths from 1,340 to 1,660 mm.

The Carry is among the most widely built commercial vehicles of its class and remains the reference among kei trucks in Japan to this day; in warmer and rural regions of the world the larger export versions are valued for their manoeuvrability and economy on narrow roads and in small-scale farming.

On used examples, the condition of the small-capacity engine run at high revs, the clutch and the load bed count, on four-wheel-drive versions the transfer case and differentials, plus corrosion on the chassis, which is often worked hard as a load carrier; parts for younger generations are well supplied through the Suzuki network, for older kei models sometimes only through specialists.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
