Sisu LV-131 – the collective page of the Finnish heavy lorry: six-cylinder diesels of 6,540 to 8,200 cm³ and 110 to 165 kW, gross weight of 16,000 to 18,000 kg, Karjaa-built for forestry, municipal and military use

Sisu Auto of Karjaa in southern Finland, founded in 1931 as Suomen Autoteollisuus, is Finland's own independent lorry maker and remains specialised to this day in heavy, off-road special vehicles for forestry, winter road maintenance, the military and heavy haulage. The LV-131 was the manufacturer's heavy range of the 1980s, with codes such as CIT, CVT and EIT in the model name denoting cab and gearbox variants. The vehicles were powered by Sisu's own six-cylinder diesel engines, whose engine plant became AGCO Power after the sale to AGCO in 2004 and has powered Valtra tractors ever since.

The register lists here 15 versions with 110 to 165 kW from six-cylinders of 6,540 to 8,200 cm³, unladen weights from 6,000 to 11,130 kg, gross weights from 16,000 to 18,000 kg, lengths from 7,000 to 8,880 mm and widths from 2,400 to 2,520 mm.

Sisu is market leader in Finland for heavy special and off-road lorries and firmly established thanks to its cold- and winter-worthiness, but remains a small manufacturer focused on the domestic and Nordic market compared with international brands such as Volvo, Scania and MAN.

On a used LV-131, the frame and axles matter because of salt and frost in the Nordic climate, the condition of the Sisu diesel engine and its injection system, the transfer case and axle locks on four-wheel-drive versions, and the brakes and hydraulics on tipper and forestry bodies; parts run through the Sisu network and Finnish commercial-vehicle specialists.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
