Seat Inca – the light van from Martorell on the Polo and Ibiza platform, built 1995 to 2003 as Light Van and Van alongside the VW Caddy II, 47 to 55 kW, 1.4- to 1.9-litre petrol, SDI and TDI engines

The Seat Inca is a light van Seat built from 1995 to 2003 in Martorell, Spain, on the platform of the third-generation Polo and Ibiza and in the same plant as the closely related VW Caddy II. The line comprised the shorter Light Van with a flat load floor and the somewhat larger Van, both with 1.4 and 1.6-litre petrol engines and 1.9 D, 1.9 SDI and 1.9 TDI diesels. Seat, part of the Volkswagen Group since 1986, put its only own light-commercial model on the road with the Inca; once it ended in 2003 the brand withdrew from the van segment entirely.

The register lists here 13 versions with 47 to 55 kW from four-cylinders of 1,390 to 1,896 cm³, unladen weights from 1,000 to 1,410 kg, gross weights from 1,499 to 1,730 kg, lengths from 4,210 to 4,350 mm and widths from 1,700 to 1,710 mm.

In the Spanish and southern European market the Inca was a popular, affordable light van for trades and small businesses, though its close kinship with the Caddy always kept it in the VW brand's shadow; today it is a rare niche vehicle of its class, of interest mainly to collectors of small commercials.

On diesel examples, the condition of the injection pump (SDI) or turbocharger (TDI) and the timing belt count, on all engines rust on sills and wheel arches, plus the condition of the load floor and bulkhead; since Seat no longer stocks parts for the Inca itself, the largely identical parts of the VW Caddy II and third-generation Polo help.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.

  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
