Seat Ibiza – the collective page of the first Ibiza generation as a light commercial vehicle, GL, L and LE trim with diesel and petrol engines, 0.9 to 1.7 litres of displacement, three- to four-cylinders

Seat, the Spanish brand founded in 1950 in Barcelona, has belonged to the Volkswagen Group in the majority since 1986 and wholly since 1990. The first Ibiza, presented in 1984, was developed with Giorgio Giugiaro as designer and Porsche engine engineers; this collective page combines first-generation models registered as a light commercial vehicle rather than a passenger car. The GL, L and LE trim levels denote different comfort levels, D the diesel engine, ST the estate version.

The register lists here 9 versions with 0.9 to 1.7 litres of displacement from three- to four-cylinders, outputs from 66 to 77 kW, unladen weights from 815 to 1,218 kg, gross weights from 1,315 to 1,665 kg, lengths from about 3,994 to 4,232 mm and widths from 1,610 to 1,693 mm.

Commercial registration of small cars such as the Ibiza as a light commercial vehicle was common practice in several European countries to gain tax advantages over registration as a passenger car, and concerned mainly simply equipped base versions with a diesel or small petrol engine.

On used examples of this early Ibiza, rust on sills, wheel arches and floor pan, the condition of clutch and carburettor or early injection, wear on the rear axle and, on the diesel engines, the injection-pump history count; because of the age of the vehicles, parts are mostly available through used-parts markets and specialist youngtimer parts dealers.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
