The T144 belongs to Scania's T range, the cab-over-engine truck without a bonnet, which from the 1980s to 1995 was the flagship for European long-haul transport and was then replaced by the bonneted range; in Brazil and Argentina Scania continued building the cab-over as the T range well into the 2000s. The 144 in the type designation refers to the 14-litre V8 engine of the then 4-series, GA, GB and LA denote different chassis heights and lengths, and the 4X2, 6X2 and 6X4 axle configurations the number of axles and driven wheels.
