The Scania R144 belongs to the 4-series, which Scania introduced in 1995 as the successor to the 3-series; R denotes the tallest, flat-floor cab version in the range, the digit group 144 the 14-litre V8 engine. Scania builds its heavy trucks in Södertälje, Sweden; the axle configurations in the model names (4x2, 6x2) and the codes NA, NB and NZ denote chassis and suspension variants. Scania was founded in 1891 in Södertälje and traces its roots to the 1911 merger with Vabis; the company's griffin emblem still adorns the bonnet today.
