Scania L – two eras of one designation: the classic L types of the 1970s/80s (L80 to L140) and the low-entry city range introduced in 2017 with diesel, gas and electric drive, 88 to 251 kW
At Scania, the L designation refers to two different eras. In the 1970s and 1980s, L (and the LS variant) denoted the tractor units and chassis of the then 80, 110 and 140 range with inline six-cylinder or V8 engines, as shown on the model plates in the register under designations such as 110 42, 140 46 or 80 S 42. In 2016/2017 Scania reintroduced the name for a standalone low-entry range with a deeply lowered cab for city transport, refuse collection and construction-site logistics, available with a classic diesel engine, natural gas/biomethane or a fully electric drivetrain.

The register lists 99 versions here with engines from 88 to 251 kW from 5,200 to 14,400 cm³ displacement with 4 to 8 cylinders, kerb weights from 4,035 to 17,100 kg, gross weights from 11,000 to 28,000 kg and fuel types ranging from diesel through natural gas/biomethane to electric.
The L range thus represents two entirely different vehicle concepts under one letter: the classic long-haul truck from the era before the 3-series, and the modern low-entry distribution truck for city centres.
On the classic L types, what counts is frame and cab rust, the condition of the clutch and manual gearbox, and spare parts supply through specialists in vintage trucks; on the modern low-entry models, battery condition and charging electronics on the electric versions, the gas system and tank pressure on CNG/biomethane, and the usual check of brakes, axles and gearbox.

What to check before buying
- Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
- Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
- Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
- Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
