Saviem was formed in 1955 from the state-directed merger of Renault's truck division with the French makers Somua and Latil, and built vans and trucks independently until the 1978 merger into the newly formed Renault Véhicules Industriels. The SG2 and TP3 types listed in this register stand for the marque's mid-range and the light pickup developed and sold jointly with Renault; the L and MB suffixes in the type codes mark different wheelbase and body variants.

Saviem commercial vehicles shaped the roads of France and its former colonies and export markets through the 1960s and 1970s, competing against Berliet, Renault-badged vehicles and Mercedes-Benz. With the 1978 merger the marque name disappeared in favour of Renault Véhicules Industriels, later Renault Trucks.
Given their age, used examples today are without exception vehicles for collectors and enthusiasts: what matters is rust on the chassis and cab, the engine's overhaul history, the cab's mounting and suspension, and the gearbox and differential; parts can now only be sourced through French vintage commercial-vehicle clubs since the marque was absorbed into Renault.
