The Silver was SAME's mid-range tractor in the 1990s and 2000s, between the smaller Explorer and the larger Titan, and carried to the end the hallmark of the Treviglio brand: the air-cooled engine. The type logic: the number gives the hp class – Silver 80 about 80 hp, 100 100 hp, 130 130 hp – DT four-wheel drive (doppia trazione), .4 and .6 the cylinder count in the later generation (Silver 100.4 as four-cylinder turbo, 100.6 as naturally aspirated six-cylinder of the same power), V the vineyard version, W an upgrade variant. The engines are SAME's 1000 series with one litre of displacement per cylinder – the 1000.4 with 4.0 litres, the 1000.6 with 6.0 litres – air-cooled with blower, which saves radiator and antifreeze and was regarded as an advantage in Southern Europe, North Africa and the Middle East.

The Silver was Europe's last air-cooled mid-range tractor in large numbers; with the transition to water-cooled Deutz engines in the SDF group after 2005 this line ended, the successors are called Iron and Virtus.
On used tractors, operating hours, the condition of cooling blower and cylinder fins (fouling leads to overheating), injection pump, shuttle and powershift steps, hydraulics and cab count; parts run through SDF.
