SAME (Società Anonima Motori Endotermici) was founded in 1942 in Treviglio near Bergamo, after Francesco Cassani had already built an early diesel four-wheel-drive tractor there in 1927; Lamborghini Trattori joined the group in 1972, Hürlimann in 1977, and since the 1995 merger with Deutz-Fahr the group has traded as SDF, still headquartered in Treviglio. The DT suffix on Italian tractors traditionally stands for Doppia Trazione, four-wheel drive, and appears on numerous types on this page such as the Buffalo DT and Condor-55 (DT). The engines historically came from the company's own production in Treviglio, and after the Deutz-Fahr merger, per the register, also from Deutz.

On used tractors, engine condition and rust on sheet metal and cab count, clutch and gearbox, front axle and transfer case on the DT four-wheel-drive types, and on the Frutteto range the condition of cab guards and hydraulics; parts run through the SDF network of SAME Deutz-Fahr.
