SAME, based in Treviglio near Bergamo and founded in 1942 by the Cassani brothers, launched the Explorer range in 1983 as a compact four-wheel-drive tractor. Over the model years the range grew from the small four-cylinder EXPLORER 55 and 65 with dual traction (DT) through the 70 and 75 with four-wheel drive (4WD/VDT) to the larger EXPLORER 90 to 125 and the later Explorer II; Cingolato denotes the tracked version, Classic and Natural later equipment grades.

The Explorer range positioned SAME between its compact municipal tractors and its big farm tractors; it targeted medium-sized farms and, with the tracked Cingolato, the steep vineyards and orchards of northern Italy, where SAME has traditionally had a strong presence.
On the Explorer range, what counts is the condition of the four-wheel-drive clutch and front axle, the tightness of the hydraulics and lift, the compression and cooling system of the four-cylinder diesels, and on the Cingolato version the undercarriage and tracks; parts run through the SAME-Deutz-Fahr network, on older model years partly only second-hand.
