With the Wuling Dragon, the Chinese manufacturer launched the successor to the Liuzhou Wuling LZ 110 in 1990. The Dragon was a cabover vehicle with the driver sitting above the engine, built as a microvan and as a pickup, and it was based on the Mitsubishi Minicab, which Wuling built under licence. In China's dense city traffic, its small size was an advantage.

At 3,500 mm long, 1,445 mm wide and 1,895 mm high, the microvan stayed very compact. The wheelbase depended on the body: 178 cm for the microvan, 201 cm for the single-cab and 237 cm for the double-cab. The transmission is a 4-speed manual gearbox.

The range of engines came from Japanese hands. There were four-cylinder units from Suzuki, for example with 797 cm³, and three-cylinder units from Daihatsu with 843 cm³, complemented by engines from Mitsubishi. This let the Dragon be equipped differently depending on the body.

The Wuling Dragon by SAIC-GM-Wuling, built since 1990: a microvan and pickup with engines from Suzuki, Daihatsu and Mitsubishi between 797 and 1,061 cm³, and three wheelbases depending on body style

The Wuling Dragon traces back to its predecessor, the Liuzhou Wuling LZ 110, and has been built since 1990 as a microvan and pickup. It is related to the Mitsubishi Minicab, placing it among the generation of Chinese light commercial vehicles built on licensed Japanese kei-car technology.

Depending on the version, engines from Suzuki at 797, 870, 970 and 1,051 cm³, from Daihatsu at 843 and 993 cm³, and from Mitsubishi at 1,061 cm³ were fitted, each in a three- or four-cylinder layout paired with a four-speed manual gearbox. Height stands at 1,895 mm, width at 1,445 mm and length at 3,500 mm. The wheelbase differs by body style: 1,780 mm for the microvan, 2,010 mm for the single-cab pickup and 2,370 mm for the double-cab pickup.

The microvan layout, with a cab-over-engine design and a short wheelbase, allows a comparatively large load area within a short overall length, of the kind needed for inner-city deliveries and small trades businesses. The choice among several small-displacement engines from different Japanese licensors allowed the drivetrain to be matched to locally available production capacity.

When buying a used example of this type, establishing which engine is actually fitted matters, since parts do not interchange freely between the Suzuki, Daihatsu and Mitsubishi variants. Corrosion of the floor pan, the condition of the clutch in the four-speed manual gearbox, and the tightness of the cab against moisture all deserve particular attention on a light commercial vehicle of this kind.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
