Robur was introduced in 1961 as the successor brand to VEB Kraftfahrzeugwerk Ernst Grube Werdau in Zittau, and as a state-owned East German enterprise built medium trucks until 1991, chiefly the LO range and its developments the LO 1800 and LO 2500; the vehicles were widely used across the Eastern Bloc as fire, ambulance and military vehicles. Robur trucks were, alongside the IFA W50, the second mainstay of East Germany's commercial-vehicle programme and were exported to numerous Comecon states; their versatility as a base for box, tipper and special bodies made them a backbone of rescue services and municipal fleets across East Germany and Eastern Europe. Even after reunification, numerous Robur vehicles remained in service with volunteer fire brigades across eastern Germany.
On these historic trucks, engine and clutch condition, frame and cab corrosion, and the brake system and axles all matter; parts supply today runs almost exclusively through Robur and classic commercial-vehicle clubs, since production finally ended in 1991.
