Renault Laguna Van – first-generation Laguna estate as an N1 commercial vehicle: four-cylinder engines from 1,783 to 2,188 cc, kerb weight 1,275 to 1,380 kg, gross vehicle weight up to 2,105 kg, width 1,750 mm

The Renault Laguna Van is the commercially registered estate version of the first-generation Laguna, built by Renault from 1994 to 2001. For commercial van registration the rear seats were removed and the rear side windows partly blanked, allowing the estate to be classed as a two-seat N1 commercial vehicle – a practice common in France and the Benelux countries to reduce registration tax and running costs. The designations 1.8, 1.8-16V, 1.9 DTI and 2.2 D denote the petrol and diesel engines of the range.

The register lists here 5 versions with four-cylinder engines of 1,783 to 2,188 cc, kerb weights of 1,275 to 1,380 kg, gross vehicle weights of 2,045 to 2,105 kg and a width of 1,750 mm.

As a commercial vehicle the Laguna Van served mainly small trade and courier businesses that benefited from cheaper commercial registration without switching to a true panel van; the body remained technically a passenger estate with generous ride comfort. Competitors in this niche were similarly converted estate versions of the Peugeot 406 and Citroën Xantia.

On the DTI diesel engines a used-buying check should cover the injection pump, turbocharger and timing belt, on all versions rust on the sills and around the rear axle, and the condition of the load-area trim after the rear seats were removed. Parts for the Laguna I platform are well supported on the aftermarket.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.

  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
