Renault AE – the collective page of the flat-cab truck designed by Gandini: six- and eight-cylinder engines of 11,920 to 16,400 cm³, forerunner of the Magnum, 275 to 353 kW

This collective page gathers the Renault AE, the heavy truck from Renault Véhicules Industriels unveiled in 1990, whose designation stands for 'Aérodynamique'. The cab, designed by Marcello Gandini, was the first in its class to have a completely flat floor with the cab mechanically separated from the engine compartment, and was voted Truck of the Year in 1991. At the top of the range, alongside the AE 380 with its six-cylinder turbodiesel, stood the AE 500 with an eight-cylinder Mack diesel engine; from the 1997 facelift Renault marketed the truck under the new name Magnum.

The register lists 19 versions with 275 to 353 kW, displacements from 11,920 to 16,400 cm³ from six- and eight-cylinder engines, unladen weights from 7,100 to 13,540 kg and gross weights from 18,000 to 26,000 kg; lengths range from 5,830 to 10,600 mm, widths from 2,450 to 2,550 mm.

With its flat, living-room-like cab, the AE marked a turning point in long-haul truck design and set a standard of driver comfort that rivals such as Scania and Volvo only reached years later; its close kinship with Mack, majority-owned by Renault from 1990, explains the eight-cylinder engine of the AE 500.

On a used AE, the mileage and condition of the six- or eight-cylinder diesel engine, the condition of the clutch and gearbox, the seal and condition of the cab mounts, and rust on the frame and axles all count; parts run through the Renault Trucks network, which still supports the AE as the forerunner of the Magnum.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
