The 951-4 comes from Renault. Production: 1/1974–5/1977. The engine delivers 95 hp (69.9 kW), has 6 cylinders, with a displacement of 5,656 cm³. Torque is 334 Nm. Rated speed is 2,350 rpm. The machine is 4,442 mm long, 2,020 mm wide and 2,765 mm high. The unladen weight is 4,295 kg. The wheelbase measures 2,683 mm. Ground clearance is 455 mm. Top speed is 25 km/h. The tank holds 117 litres. Transmission: 12V/12R or 16V/16R. The engine is water-cooled. Tyres: front 14.9 R 24 AS, rear 16.9 R 38 AS. The fuel is diesel. The bore measures 100 mm. The stroke is 120 mm. The compression ratio is 17.9:1. Maximum torque is reached at 1,500 rpm. Construction: unit construction (no separate frame). Injection pressure is 180 bar. The linkage is category I/II. The PTO runs at 540/1000 rpm. Around 1.350 units were built. Rated output across the Renault range ranges from 16 to 250 hp; the 951-4 sits in the lower part of that range with 95 hp. Its immediate neighbours are the 103-54 TX below it with 93 hp and the 106-14 SP above it with 96 hp. Rated output across the Renault range ranges from 16 to 250 hp; here the 951-4 sits in the lower part of that range with 95 hp. 3632 Renault models across 98 series are on record.

Renault – other models: the collective page of French tractors outside the named ranges, from the D and N types through the 651 to 981 ranges to Ceres, Ares and Celtis, 11 to 166 kW, MWM, Deutz and Perkins engines

This page gathers the Renault tractors the register could not assign to a named range – from early post-war models to the ranges shortly before the takeover by Claas in 2003. Renault Agriculture, which emerged from the farm-machinery division of the car maker founded in 1920, built its tractors in Le Mans, France. The type logic changed several times: the D and N types of the 1950s and 1960s (D22, D35, N72) were small, simple utility tractors; the three-digit 651 to 981 ranges of the 1970s and 1980s order the power class in ascending order, -4 marks four-wheel-drive models and (S) the synchro-gearbox version. From the 1990s came ranges with names instead of numbers – Ceres (mid-range), Cergos, Ares (large and mid-range), Atles (big tractors), Celtis (compact class) and Pales and the narrow-track Fructus and Multis models for vineyards and orchards.

The register lists here 66 versions with 11 to 166.3 kW from two- to six-cylinders of 1,810 to 7,146 cm³, unladen weights from 1,400 to 9,690 kg, lengths from 3,000 to 6,641 mm, widths from 1,220 to 2,550 mm and torque from 113 to 505 Nm at 2,150 to 2,350 rpm; the engines come among others from MWM, Deutz, John Deere, Perkins and Mitsubishi.

For decades Renault was, alongside Massey Ferguson, one of the leading tractor brands in France and strongly represented in viticulture, for which the narrow-track Fructus and Multis ranges were developed; after the 2003 takeover by Claas the models continued for a time under the Renault name before the brand was replaced by Claas by 2005.

On used tractors, engine and clutch condition count on the older D and numbered ranges, electronics, hydraulics and cab-mounting condition on the named ranges of the 1990s, and wear on steering and lift linkage from working between vine rows on the narrow-track vineyard models; parts now run through the Claas network.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
