Peugeot Boxer (2019): panel van on the Sevel platform with 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel, 3,500 kg gross weight and 4,040 mm wheelbase

The Peugeot Boxer is the PSA version of the Sevel platform for heavy vans, developed jointly with the Fiat Ducato and Citroën Jumper and built in Val di Sangro, Italy. It ranks among the largest series-production vans in its class and is used both as a factory panel van and as a chassis for conversions by bodybuilders fitting their own box, refrigerated or flatbed bodies.

The four-cylinder diesel with a displacement of 1,997 cc is the smaller of the two Boxer engine options. At 3,500 kg gross vehicle weight and 2,350 kg kerb weight, the payload comes to around 1,150 kg. The long 4,040 mm wheelbase gives a large load volume between the axles, while the 2,200 mm body width sits within the factory dimensions of the Boxer body.

At 3,500 kg gross vehicle weight the Boxer remains in EU category N1 and can be driven on a category B licence. Front-wheel drive with a transverse engine gives a flat load floor free of a driveshaft tunnel, an advantage over rear-wheel-drive vans of the same size when carrying pallets or bulky loads.

When buying a used Boxer of these model years, it is worth checking the rear leaf-spring mounts and sliding-door runners for corrosion, as well as the condition of the dual-clutch unit if an automated gearbox is fitted. The 2.0-litre HDi engine needs regular replacement of the particulate filter and checks of the AdBlue system; a clogged filter shows up as reduced power and higher fuel consumption. Wiring near the rear doors should also be checked for chafing.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
