For three decades the Rekord was Opel's bread-and-butter mid-size model and one of West Germany's best-selling estates; the Caravan version served tradesmen, rural doctors and public authorities as an all-purpose vehicle and competed directly with the Ford Taunus Turnier and the estates from Mercedes-Benz.
On a used Rekord, rust on the wheel arches, sills and floor pan, the condition of the carburettor or injection and the cooling system of the CIH engines, the condition of the glow-plug system on the D models, and the axles and brakes all count; parts are available through the classic-Opel enthusiast scene and independent suppliers.
