Nuffield DM4 – the Universal Four from Birmingham: four-cylinder diesel of the 1950s, 32 to 41 kW, forerunner of the later Leyland tractors

Nuffield tractors were built by the Nuffield Organisation, the British motor group set up by Lord Nuffield (William Morris), at the Ward End works in Birmingham, previously home to Morris Commercial. The DM4, officially the Universal Four, was the four-cylinder version of the 1950s Universal series and complemented the smaller three-cylinder models with more power for heavier field work. The DM4 designation points to the four-cylinder engine within the Universal range. After the merger of the British motor groups, Nuffield tractor production passed to the Leyland brand towards the end of the 1960s.

The register lists here 5 versions with 32 to 41 kW from four-cylinders of 3,400 to 3,402 cm³, unladen weights of 2,300 to 2,305.5 kg, lengths of 3,080 to 3,090 mm and widths of 1,650 to 2,100 mm.

The DM4 served post-war British agriculture as a solid all-round tractor in the mid power class and competed with contemporary models from Fordson, Ferguson and David Brown; the Universal series also sold well across the Commonwealth.

When buying these classics, what counts is the condition of the injection pump and cylinder head, the tightness of the hydraulics, rust on sheet metal and wings, and the completeness of fittings; spare parts for Nuffield tractors today come mainly through specialist British vintage dealers.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
