Nissan Vanette – from in-house design to Renault derivative: the original Vanette and the Trafic-based Vanette Cargo, four cylinders, 47 to 55 kW, up to 2,505 kg gross weight

Nissan launched the Vanette in 1978 as its own small van; from the mid-1990s the Vanette Cargo replaced Nissan's previous in-house design in Europe with a version based on the second-generation Renault Trafic, a result of close cooperation between the two makers in the European commercial-vehicle business. DC in the type designation denotes the double cab, LWB the long wheelbase, SR an upmarket trim variant.

The register lists here 26 versions with 47 to 55 kW from four-cylinders throughout of 1,488 to 2,283 cm³ displacement, unladen weights from 1,000 to 1,660 kg, gross weights from 1,800 to 2,505 kg, lengths from 4,370 to 4,500 mm and widths from 1,610 to 1,710 mm.

The original Vanette served a niche in Europe alongside the big European van brands, while the later Vanette Cargo, as a Renault derivative, gave Nissan access to the van segment without its own development costs; after the Vanette range ended, the NV200 took over this role at Nissan.

On a used original Vanette, rust on the load floor and wheel arches and the condition of the simple diesel engine count; on the Vanette Cargo, by contrast, the weak points typical of the Renault Trafic such as timing-belt intervals and the clutch thrust rod; parts for the Cargo version are easier to source through the shared Renault network than for the older in-house design.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
