Nissan Kubistar – the light-van range built as the Renault Kangoo: 1.2 and 1.6-litre petrol engines and a 1.5-litre dCi diesel, 50 to 62 kW, unladen weights from 950 to 1,250 kg

The Kubistar was Nissan's version of the Renault Kangoo, born from the Renault-Nissan alliance formed in 1999: the body, engines and production at Renault's Maubeuge plant in northern France carried over unchanged, only the front end and trim differed from the Kangoo. The Kubistar was sold from 2003 into the second half of the decade as a van and as an estate (GV, for Grand Volume, with a raised roof). The type names give displacement and power directly – 1.2 16V, 1.5 dCi with the power in kW after the name, 1.6 16V with an automatic option – E4 marks vehicles with the Euro 4 emissions standard.

The register lists here 21 versions with 50 to 62 kW from four-cylinders of 1,140 to 1,598 cm³, unladen weights from 950 to 1,250 kg, gross weights from 1,600 to 1,890 kg, lengths from 4,000 to 4,040 mm and widths from 1,660 to 1,670 mm.

The Kubistar served the small-van niche below the Nissan Primastar and targeted tradespeople and small businesses that benefited from Renault's broad sales and parts network; against the identical Kangoo, market share under the Nissan badge stayed small, so the Kubistar is better known in many countries as a used-car purchase.

On a used example, clutch and gearbox condition count across all engines, turbocharger and injectors on the 1.5 dCi diesels plus the particulate filter on E4 models, and rust on the sliding door and load floor on the vans; parts run through the Renault network, as body and mechanicals are identical to the Kangoo.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
