Nissan Interstar – the Nissan version of the Renault Master since 2002: dCi diesel engines from 1.9 to 3.0 litres, 74 to 135 kW, van, chassis-cab and pick-up in several wheelbases

The Nissan Interstar is the technically identical, Nissan-badged version of the Renault Master from the two makers' alliance: from 2002 Nissan added this large van, built at Renault's Batilly plant in northern France, to its range in order to extend the top of its commercial-vehicle line-up without its own development cost. The nameplates follow Renault's logic: the first number gives roughly the power class in horsepower, the second the weight class (28 for about 2.8 t, 33 for 3.3 t, 35 for 3.5 t gross weight), the following three-digit number the wheelbase and body length, and L, M and H the roof height. From 2010, with the next Master generation, the name Nissan NV400 replaced Interstar. The engines are Renault's dCi diesel range of 1.9 to 3.0 litres.

The register lists here 83 versions with outputs from 84 to 107 kW, displacements from 1,870 to 2,953 cm³, throughout four-cylinder, unladen weights from 1,707 to 3,395 kg, gross weights from 2,395 to 3,510 kg, lengths from 5,400 to 7,140 mm and widths from 1,990 to 2,250 mm.

As a badge-engineering product of the Renault-Nissan alliance, the Interstar clearly trailed the identical Master in unit numbers, but gave Nissan customers a full-fledged large-van programme with van, chassis-cab and pick-up bodies in several wheelbases.

On dCi engines, the condition of the injectors and high-pressure pump, the timing belt changed at the prescribed interval, the clutch and dual-mass flywheel, rust on the frame, rear doors and sliding-door rails, and on later models the particulate filter all count; parts run through the Renault-Nissan network, with Renault workshops often offering better parts availability.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
