New Holland has built skid-steer loaders since 1972 at its Wichita, Kansas plant – then still as Sperry New Holland – and is the brand that introduced vertical lift with the L-series Super Boom in 1985: a lift arm with parallelogram linkage that raises the bucket vertically instead of in an arc and so reaches further forward when loading trucks than a radial lift. The register shows two naming generations: the L models (L120 to L190) of the 1990s and the LS models (LS120 to LS190.B) of the 2000s, where .B marks the second upgrade level; the number orders the size class in ascending order from the small L120 to the L190 of the 3,000 lb class. From 2008 the L200 and later the L300 series followed on the same system.

The register lists 18 versions with 12.3 to 55.2 kW from two- to four-cylinders of 624 to 4,502 cm³ – Shibaura N843 and N844 in the medium, NH 673 and 334 in the larger, a Kohler CH18 in the smallest model – at rated speeds of 2,300 to 3,600 rpm.
The Shibaura engines come from the joint venture of New Holland and the Japanese maker that also powers the brand's compact tractors; the sister models ran at Case as the 400 series after both brands were united under CNH in 1999.
On used machines, operating hours, play in lift arm and Super Boom joints, the condition of drive hydraulics and chain cases, tyres and quick coupler and Shibaura parts supply through CNH dealers are what count.
