Navistar International – other models: the collective page of International trucks and buses outside the named ranges, from the LoneStar to the Thomas school bus, 7,270 to 14,900 cm³ displacement, six to eight cylinders

Navistar International emerged in 1986 from the renaming of the storied International Harvester, which had built trucks in the US under the International name since the early 1900s, and continues its truck division under the International brand to this day; through its subsidiary Thomas Built Buses, Navistar also builds school buses on International chassis. The LoneStar is a conventional long-nose truck for North American long-haul transport, while earlier ranges such as the 3000 and 9000 series covered distribution and construction trucks. This page gathers the Navistar International types the register could not assign to a named range.

The register lists here 6 versions with displacements from 7,270 to 14,900 cm³ from six to eight cylinders, unladen weights from 6,623 to 11,800 kg, gross weights from 11,566 to 27,770 kg, lengths from 8,300 to 11,550 mm and widths from 2,450 to 2,550 mm.

International is one of the most storied American truck makers and, with the LoneStar and the Thomas Built Buses school buses, is ubiquitous on North American roads; in long-haul transport the brand competes with Freightliner, Kenworth and Peterbilt, in school buses with Blue Bird and IC Bus.

On these heavy trucks and buses, the condition of the frame, axles and brake system, the operating hours and service history of the diesel engine, and, on school buses, body corrosion all matter; parts run through the International dealer network, which is dense in North America but has little presence in Europe.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
