Morris was one of the traditional British car makers and became part of the British Motor Corporation in 1952. The Minor, designed in 1948 by Alec Issigonis and built at the Cowley plant near Oxford, was one of the best-selling British post-war cars; alongside the saloon, Morris built a van and a pick-up on the same floorpan from 1953. The designation 8 cwt (hundredweight) marks a payload class of around 400 kg, the designation 1000 the more powerful version introduced from 1956 with the A-series engine. As commercial vehicles with an enclosed load area or an open bed, the van and pick-up were classed as light commercial vehicles.
