Unladen weight within it ranges from 6,725 to 18,300 kg; here the 1833K 4X2 sits in the upper part of that range with 15,450 kg. 8330 Mercedes Benz models across 126 series are on record.

Mercedes-Benz Axor – the mid-range between Atego and Actros, 2001 to 2013: OM906/OM457 inline engines of 170 to 315 kW, 4x2 to 8x4 chassis, distribution and construction-site haulage

The Axor replaced Mercedes-Benz's previous mid-range in 2001, positioned between the lighter Atego and the heavy long-haul Actros; production ended in 2013 with the introduction of the new Actros generation, which has since covered the mid weight classes as well. The four-digit type designation follows the Mercedes scheme: the first two digits give the gross weight in hundreds of kilograms (18 for 18 tonnes, 25 for 25 tonnes, 32 for 32 tonnes), the following two the power class, L stands for the long-haul cab, K for the construction version, and the axle formula (4x2, 6x2, 6x4, 8x4) for drive and axle count.

The register lists 94 versions here with engines from 170 to 315 kW from 6,370 to 11,970 cm³ displacement with 6 cylinders, kerb weights from 6,725 to 19,490 kg, gross weights from 18,000 to 35,000 kg, lengths from 5,780 to 11,900 mm and widths from 2,450 to 2,600 mm.

The Axor was widespread as a distribution truck, tipper and construction vehicle and formed the backbone of Mercedes' mid-range truck programme for well over a decade, before the Actros family took over the mid weight classes.

On used OM906/OM457 inline engines, what counts is the turbocharger, injection pump and cooling system, the condition of the clutch and gearbox, frame and cab rust, and on tipper and construction versions the hydraulics and underrun protection; spare parts are widely available through the Mercedes network and independent commercial-vehicle workshops.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
