The Atego arrived in 1998 as the mid-range series between the light Vario and the heavy Actros, and has since covered the distribution and municipal-vehicle class from roughly 6.5 to 26 tonnes; facelifts followed in 2004 and 2013 with new cabs and emission stages. The four-digit type number follows Mercedes' factory standard: the first one or two digits give the weight class in tonnes, the last two roughly the output in horsepower divided by ten – a 1224 stands for about 12 t and roughly 240 hp.
