McCormick SUPER-W range – 1950s standard-tread tractors with TA powershift: SUPER W-4 to SUPER WD-9, WD for diesel, four-cylinders of 2.7 to 5.7 litres, 34 to 66 hp, 1.78 to 3.2 t
The SUPER-W range was International Harvester's standard-tread tractor programme under the McCormick brand from the mid-1950s, when IHC brought its whole line from Super A to Super W to market with reworked engines and the new Torque Amplifier. The type logic: W marks the standard-tread tractor with a straight front axle, unlike the Farmall ranges with high clearance for row-crop work, D the diesel version, TA the Torque Amplifier, an underload-shiftable auxiliary gearbox that doubled the number of speeds without depressing the clutch. The SUPER WD-9 stood as the largest model at the top of the range.

The register lists 6 versions with 25 to 48.5 kW (34 to 66 hp) from four-cylinders of 2,680 to 5,734 cm³ at 1,450 to 1,650 rpm, torque from 358 to 719 Nm, unladen weights from 1,776 to 3,200 kg, lengths from 2,902 to 3,556 mm, widths from 1,657 to 2,057 mm and heights from 2,032 to 2,372 mm, with a choice of diesel, petrol/kerosene or LPG engine.
The SUPER-W range was the standard tractor of North American grain and mixed farms that did not need a high-clearance row-crop tractor, competing with John Deere, Allis-Chalmers and Case for this market before IHC moved to the 400 and 600 ranges at the end of the 1950s.
On used tractors, engine and injection pump or carburettor with LPG system, clutch and gearbox with the Torque Amplifier, hydraulics and PTO, brakes and sheet metal and frame for rust count; parts for the 1950s IHC standard tractors are still widely available through vintage-tractor dealers.

What to check before buying
- Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
- Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
- Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
- Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
- Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
- Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
- Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
