The McCormick FU-237 belongs to the UTILITY series. Production: 1961. The engine delivers 30 hp (22.1 kW), has 4 cylinders, with a displacement of 2,097 cm³. Torque is 118 Nm. Rated speed is 1,800 rpm. The machine is 2,930 mm long, 1,720 mm wide and 1,540 mm high. The unladen weight is 1,680 kg. The wheelbase measures 1,780 mm. Ground clearance is 330 mm. Top speed is 20 km/h. The tank holds 43 litres. Transmission: 6 V/1 R. The engine is water-cooled. Tyres: front 4.50-16, rear 10-28. The fuel is diesel. The bore measures 80.96 mm. The stroke is 101.6 mm. Maximum torque is reached at 1,200 rpm. Construction: unit construction (no separate frame). The gearbox offers 6 forward gears. There are also 1 reverse gears. The UTILITY-Baureihe series covers 6 models. Rated output within it ranges from 24.5 to 35 hp; the FU-237 sits in the middle of that range with 30 hp. Its immediate neighbours are the FU-235 D below it with 26 hp and the FU-265 D above it with 35 hp. Unladen weight within it ranges from 1,330 to 1,820 kg; here the FU-237 sits in the upper part of that range with 1,680 kg. 381 McCormick models across 40 series are on record.

McCormick UTILITY range – International Harvester's light utility tractors: FU-235 to FU-267 D, D for diesel, four-cylinders of 2.0 to 2.2 litres, 26 to 35 hp, 1.33 to 1.82 t, diesel or petrol

The UTILITY range was the light utility tractor in the McCormick programme of International Harvester, which had carried the McCormick name on its European field tractors since the 1920s. The FU-235 to FU-267 D models and the UTILITY-SUPER FC-C formed the entry class for small and medium farms; the D in the model name marks the diesel version, while models without D ran optionally with a petrol engine, as the fuel mix in the register also shows. All versions carry four-cylinder engines of around two litres.

The register lists 6 versions with 18 to 25.7 kW (26 to 35 hp) from four-cylinders of 2,011 to 2,228 cm³ at 1,650 to 2,000 rpm, torque from 118 to 157 Nm, unladen weights from 1,330 to 1,820 kg, lengths from 2,765 to 3,100 mm, widths from 1,720 to 2,080 mm and heights from 1,416 to 1,700 mm, mostly with a diesel engine, alongside petrol and combined petrol/diesel versions.

The UTILITY range targeted mixed family farms for which a large International Harvester tractor would have been oversized, with simple engineering and low upkeep as the selling point against competitors such as Fiat, Ferguson and Deutz.

On used tractors, engine and injection pump or carburettor on petrol versions, clutch and gearbox, hydraulics and PTO, brakes and sheet metal and frame for rust count; parts for the old McCormick-International tractors now run mostly through specialist dealers.

What to check before buying

  • Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
  • Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
  • Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
  • Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
  • Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
  • Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
  • Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
