McCormick-Deering Farmall Letters range – five tractors from the A/AV to the MD/MDV, built 1939 to 1954, four-cylinder engines of 1,853 to 4,059 cm³, 14 to 27.2 kW
The Farmall Letters range was the generation of International Harvester tractors built from 1939 to 1954 with letter-based type designations; the register lists here the A/AV, B/BN, H/HV, M/MV and MD/MDV. The V suffix denoted versions with raised ground clearance for row crops such as vegetables, MD/MDV the diesel variant of the large M.

The register lists here five versions with 14 to 27.2 kW from four-cylinder engines of 1,853 to 4,059 cm³ displacement, unladen weights from 830 to 2,404 kg, lengths from 2,699 to 3,381 mm, widths from 1,419 to 2,146 mm and heights from 1,607 to 1,988 mm at speeds of 1,400 to 1,650 rpm; the models mostly ran on distillate, kerosene or petrol engines, the MD/MDV on diesel.
The Farmall Letters series, with its distinctive design by industrial designer Raymond Loewy and its graduated model range from A to M, shaped the North American tractor market of the post-war period and became a template for numerous competing models from other makers.
When buying used, the condition of the cylinder head and carburettor, or the injection pump on the MD/MDV, wear on the clutch and gearbox and corrosion on sheet-metal parts and wings matter; spare parts are comparatively well available thanks to the high production numbers and an active collector scene. Original paint and decals, where preserved, are particularly prized by collectors and are worth documenting before any restoration work.

What to check before buying
- Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
- Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
- Check the weights in the papers against the figures here — attachments change them.
- Check front and rear tyre sizes: mismatched pairs strain the drivetrain.
- Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
- Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
- Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
