The name Marshall covers two separate chapters of British tractor history: Marshall, Sons & Co of Gainsborough built the single-cylinder Field Marshall with its characteristic cartridge start and hot-bulb ignition into the 1950s; in 1981 a buyout group took over the former Leyland plant at Bathgate in Scotland and continued its tractor production under the Marshall name. The three-digit types from 502 to 954 XL continue the numbering logic of the Leyland predecessors, visible in matching model numbers such as 502, 602, 604, 704 and 804.

The register lists here 35 versions with 19 to 110 kW (22 to 150 hp) from three- to six-cylinder engines, powered by the former Leyland units as well as Steyr and Perkins engines, including the Perkins 4.236 family.
The Bathgate-built Marshalls continued the British tradition of mid-size field tractors into the 1980s and competed with Ford, Massey Ferguson and David Brown, while the classic Field Marshall, a single-cylinder hot-bulb tractor, is today mainly regarded as a sought-after collector's piece.
Buying used, inspection differs markedly by build year: on the Field Marshall what counts is the condition of the hot bulb, injection and the brand's characteristic rope starter, on the 500 to 900 types the gearbox, clutch and hydraulics, and – depending on the engine fitted – parts availability for Leyland, Steyr or Perkins units, which differs considerably.

What to check before buying
- Check the hour meter against the service records — a replaced instrument is the most common gap.
- Compare the data plate and chassis number with the papers.
- Shift the gearbox cold and warm — jumps only show up at temperature.
- Load the hydraulics and watch for sag.
- Ask about parts availability for this build year — the running costs hang on it.
